Cedarville State Forest

Cedarville Hideout

Cedarville State Forest: Is a natural Retreat in Southern Maryland. It’s nestled in the rural landscape of Brandywine. This forest is one of Maryland’s most accessible and ecologically rich outdoor destinations. Spanning over 3,800 acres across Prince George’s and Charles Counties. The forest offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and diverse recreational opportunities and is just a short drive for the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Further this forest is characterized by a mosaic of ecosystems, including mixed hardwood forest, bottomland hardwoods, and stands of loblolly and Virginia pine. These varied habitats support a wide range of plant and animal life, making the forest an important conservation area in Southern Maryland.

One of the forest’s most defining natural features is its location at the headwaters of the Zekiah Swamp. The largest freshwater swamp in Maryland. This swamp stretches for about 20 miles and serves as a vital refuge for wildlife, contributing to the forest’s ecological importance.

Long before it became a state forest, the land was used by the Piscataway Tribe. Who favored the area as a winter hunting and camping ground due to its mild climate and abundant wildlife. Visitors can enjoy seasonal camping, with designated sites for families, youth groups, and equestrians. A small pond allows for bank fishing, and hunting is permitted in designated seasons and areas.
